National Tropical Botanical Garden, Kalaheo, Kauai, Hawaii, 2008-Present

This intimate and brilliantly-sited complex of buildings designed by Vladimir Ossipoff (1907-1998) – his last campus design – is the headquarters of this national organization dedicated to the preservation, conservation and education of tropical botany. As the Botanical Research Center neared its completion in 2008, DSA was asked to prepare renovation plans for the existing Administration, Education and Research buildings. In addition to space planning and exterior repairs, DSA’s design incorporates the mixing of natural and mechanical ventilation systems while improving the thermal performance of the existing building envelopes in a sympathetic manner to Ossipoff's design.
