American Savings Bank, Downtown Branch

Location: Downtown Honolulu, Hawaii

Year: 2026

This project is a total conversion of an existing ground-floor retail space into the new Downtown Honolulu branch of American Savings Bank (ASB), located in the American Savings Bank Tower. ASB’s core values—making banking easy, delivering high performance, creating a great workplace, and impacting the community—guided key design decisions.

A calm material palette, balanced lighting, and ergonomic furnishings support a comfortable and productive work environment. Community impact is expressed through large-scale kalo (taro) murals by Sig Zane and the use of locally harvested Albizia wood—an invasive species—repurposed for all exposed millwork. The design engages the building’s original Tropical Brutalist architecture by Joe Farrell, FAIA (1932-2021), pairing curvilinear Albizia elements with existing corduroy concrete. This approach preserves architectural integrity while integrating modern building systems.
