Principal
Mr. Sakamoto is an architect in private practice, university educator, and director of a public interest design foundation. He has an international and national presence through his professional and academic work and diverse areas of expertise. The entities which he leads, Dean Sakamoto Architects/SHADE are based in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.
He is a licensed architect in the states of Hawai‘i, Connecticut, and Nevada and holds certificates from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED AP) from the U.S. Green Building Council, and Social Environmental Economic Design (SEED) from the Public Interest Design Institute. In 2010, Mr. Sakamoto was elevated to fellowship by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for his national contributions in architectural education. From 2013-2016, he served on the AIA National Disaster Assistance Committee, through which he helped to promote preparedness by design among professionals and leaders of coastal communities.
