Hilo Public Library

Location: Hilo, Hawaii

Year: 2025

The Hilo Public Library, originally constructed in 1950, remains largely intact, except a main-level collection wing added in the 1980s. The proposed renovation will comprehensively modernize the facility while preserving its architectural character and improving its functionality.

The proposed design unifies the building and site through the relocated entrance and the addition of the community pavilion, which will provide flexible after-hours programming space. While the library's collection areas will largely remain in their current locations, they will be reorganized to improve functionality. Staff workspaces will be relocated and consolidated both horizontally and vertically to enhance operational efficiency, workflow, and collaboration.
