Farmington Canal
Greenway
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Year: 2008-2025
The final increment of this "rails to trails" project funded by the Connecticut State Department of Transportation and administered by the City of New Haven's Department of City Plan is an opportunity for DSA to exercise its expertise in urban design, sustainable architecture and interpretive experiences. This multi-use recreational trail is the remnant of the former Farmington Canal (1828-1848) and Railroad (1848-1985) which linked Northampton, MA to New Haven Harbor. DSA's design concept is to create an urban destination that connects the Yale campus and the Audubon Street Arts District. The underground segment between Temple Street and Whitney Avenue will feature DSA’s interpretive timeline display, which charts the history of the canal, railway, and greenway developments.
