Jean Prouve:
A Tropical House

Location: Yale School of Architecture Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut

Year: 2005

The Tropical House is an icon of prefabricated architecture that was developed and manufactured by Jean Prouve in 1951 for worker housing in the French colonies of Africa. Dean Sakamoto, as director of exhibitions at the School of Architecture and working with curator Robert Rubin, designed and organized this two-part exhibition. From February 14th to May 6, 2005, a section of the house and its historical artifacts were displayed in the gallery. As spring weather arrived, from April through June 2005, the entire house was assembled and displayed on the open lot next to the School. Sakamoto also designed a weathering steel fence, site lighting and a viewing area with signage to secure and interpret the house.
